I'm a terrible singer..."
"I never got involved with music..." These are comments I hear from parents at Parent/Teacher conferences. I often get the sense that they want to support their child with their love and interest of music but have no idea how to do that. My response has always circled back to the same answer, which is "exposure to music is all that really matters". If we only taught our children the life skills that we were proficient at, we wouldn't teach them very many things at all. I am not a professional basketball player and yet I still hope to teach my children how to dribble a ball one day. My mother was not a professional chef and yet she still managed to teach me how to cook. As parents we sometimes need to step outside our comfort zone(s) in order to show our kids how to do something. Music is no different. And the good news is, they will think you are the best singer/drummer ever because they look up to you and love you no matter what! And if you do have a child who continues to love music and wants to learn more outside of the classroom, private lessons are a great way to encourage and push your child to the next level. If you are interested in this option, please let me know and I would be happy to help. And lastly, and most importantly, BE THERE FOR THEM! When they have a concert, come early and come often; even if they say they don't want you there, they really do.
